LOCATION of the hull
The location is a challenge in itself. The Askoy II is as far away as it’s possible to be: about 20,000 kilometres from Belgium or halfway round the world.
The hull is in miraculously good condition. Measurements taken by the brothers Piet and Staf Wittewrongel show that the steel sheeting has retained its original thickness. This is certainly due to the high-grade Siemens-Martin steel used at the time.

SITUATION DE L’EPAVE
L’endroit seul est déjà un défi ! Askoy II gît en effet à quelque 20.000 km de chez nous, aux antipodes de la planète, bref, au plus loin.
Etonnamment, la coque est en bon état ! Des mesures prises sur place par Piet et Staf Wittevrongel indiquent que l’acier a conservé son épaisseur d’origine. La qualité des aciers à haute résistance Siemens-Martin utilisés à la construction n’y est pas étarngère.

De ligging alleen al is een uitdaging. De Askoy II ligt namelijk op voor ons de verst mogelijke locatie: ongeveer 20.000 km van hier of de halve aardomtrek.
Wonderwel is de romp nog in gezonde staat. Metingen door de gebroeders Piet en Staf Wittevrongel ter plaatse verricht, tonen aan dat het staal zijn originele plaatdikte heeft bewaard. De kwaliteit van het indertijd gebruikte
hoogwaardig staal (Siemens-Martin) is daar niet vreemd aan.

PRELIMINARY STUDY
In February 2005 Staf and Piet Wittevrongel visited the Marquesas Islands and New Zealand. They made all the contacts needed to reclaim the Askoy II. While there they met Lindsay Wright, the last owner of the boat, who relinquished the right to ownership to the Save Askoy II npo in 2004.

ETUDE DE FAISABILITE
En février 2005, Staf et Piet Wittevrongel se rendent aux Marquises et en Nouvelle-Zélande, et posent les contacts utiles à l’acquisition de l’épave d’Askoy II.
Ils rencontrent notamment Lindsay Wright, le dernier propriétaire du bateau, qui cède les droits de propriété à l’asbl Save Askoy II.

VOORSTUDIE
In februari 2005 brachten Staf en Piet Wittevrongel een bezoek aan de Markiezen-eilanden en aan Nieuw- Zeeland. Zij legden alle noodzakelijke contacten om het wrak van de Askoy II te kunnen recupereren.
Zij ontmoetten er o.a. Lindsay Wright, de laatste eigenaar van de boot, die de eigendomsrechten in 2004 afstond aan de vzw Save Askoy II.
