BACKGROUND The Askoy II was built for the renowned Belgian architect Hugo Van Kuyck in 1960. Askoy is the name of an island off the Norwegian coast, just off the port of Bergen. It was designed by Raymond Derkinderen and built in the Vandevoorde shipyard. It is 20 metres long, 5 metres wide and weighs 40 tons. Van Kuyck sailed on the Baltic Sea, round Norway and round Scotland. In 1974 he sold the boat to Jacques Brel, who ultimately sailed to the Marquesas Islands. In 1976 he sold his yacht to the Americans Cathy Cleveland & Lee Adamsson. They sailed to French Polynesia and New Zealand and finally landed in Hawaii. She in her turn sold the boat on to Harlow Jones, who elaborated with the Askoy II a fishing program with the local people from the Pacific Islands. His company was called: Harlow Island Packet Trading Co. The next sale was to a German, who afterwards turned out to be a drug-smuggler. The boat was confiscated on the Fiji Islands and in 1993 was sold by auction to Lindsay Wright, a maritime journalist from New Zealand. He sailed back home on Askoy II entirely alone, but was caught in a storm and was finally stranded on Baylys Beach on the north-west coast. Which is where the yacht has been waiting to be saved. Where the yacht was saved in 2008 and brought back to Belgium. It is now under restoration. A superb model of the yacht can be viewed at the Royal Belgian Yacht Club in Antwerp. PRELIMINAIRE Askoy II, construit en 1960, était une commande de l’architecte belge bien connu, Hugo Van Kuyck. Askoy est le nom d’une île au large de la Norvège, face au port de Bergen. Dessiné par Raymond Derkinderen il fut construit au chantier Vandevoorde. A son lancement, le voilier est long de 20 mètres, large de 5, et pèse 40 tonnes. Van Kuyck navigue en mer Baltique, autour de la Norvège et de l’Ecosse. En 1974, il vend le bateau à Jacques Brel, qui le conduira jusqu’aux Marquises. En 1976, Jacques Brel vend à son tour le bateau à Cathy Cleveland, une américaine qui sillonne avec lui la Polynésie Française, cingle ensuite vers la Nouvelle Zélande et met enfin le cap sur Hawaï. C’est là qu’à son tour, elle cède le bateau à Harlow Jones. Enfin, Askoy II finit entre les mains d'un allemand, qui s’avèrera être un traficant de drogue, et qui sera appréhendé aux Iles Fidji. Placé sous séquestre, le bateau, mis en vente publique, revient à Lindsay Wright, un journaliste néo-zélandais spécialiste de la mer, qui, bientôt, prend la mer seul vers son pays, essuie une terrible tempête devant Baylys Beach, où il échoue Askoy II. C’est là qu’Askoy II attend d’être sauvé. En 2008 Le bateau a été sauvé et repatrié en Belgique . Elle est en restauration. Une très belle maquette d’Askoy II est visible au Royal Yacht Club d’Anvers. VOORGESCHIEDENIS De Askoy II werd gebouwd in 1960 voor de gekende Belgische architect Hugo Van Kuyck. Askoy is de naam van een eiland aan de Noorse kust, gelegen vlak voor de havenstad Bergen. Ze werd getekend door Raymond Derkinderen en gebouwd op de scheepswerf Vandevoorde. Het jacht is 20 meter lang, 5 meter breed en weegt 40 ton. Van Kuyck zeilde met het jacht in de Baltische Zee, rond Noorwegen en rond Schotland. In 1974 verkocht hij de boot aan Jacques Brel, die uiteindelijk naar de Markiezeneilanden zeilde. In 1976 verkocht hij zijn schip aan de Amerikaanse Cathy Cleveland. Zij zeilde met het jacht in Frans Polynesië en Nieuw-Zeeland om vervolgens in Hawai te belanden. Op haar beurt verkocht zij de boot aan Harlow Jones, die met de Askoy II een vishandelproject oprichtte met de lokale vissers van de Eilanden in de Pacific, onder de naam Harlow Island Packet Trading Co. Uiteindelijk werd het jacht weer verkocht aan een Duitser, die achteraf een drugsmokkelaar bleek te zijn. Het schip werd in beslag genomen op de Fiji-eilanden en in 1993 openbaar verkocht aan Lindsay Wright, een maritiem journalist uit Nieuw Zeeland. Hij zeilde met de Askoy II helemaal alleen naar zijn thuisland , kwam in een storm terecht en strandde uiteindelijk op Baylys Beach op de noordwestkust. Daar wacht het jacht op zijn redding. In 2008 werd het yacht opgegraven en teruggebracht naar België. Het wordt nu gerestaureerd. Een prachtige maquette van het zeiljacht is te bewonderen in de Royal Yacht Club van België te Antwerpen. |
